Large Format and 3D Printing

UP’s large-format printer and 3D printer are available only for on-campus Yale College productions receiving direct support from Undergraduate Production. These resources are intended to support the production needs of Yale College theater projects and are not available for personal use.

Large Format Printing

  • Printer: HP DesignJet 650T
  • Maximum Print Width: 36 inches (914 mm)
  • Accepts 2-inch core roll media (Max OD: 3.9”) or individual sheets cut to size
  • Prints may be produced at various lengths depending on the media used, but the maximum printable width is 36 inches

The HP DesignJet 650T can print on a variety of roll and sheet media. UP typically stocks:

  • Bond paper (standard plotting paper, available in rolls)
  • Flame-retardant (FR) paper (available as sheets and must be cut to the desired size before printing)

Material availability may vary based on current inventory. Specialty media may require advance purchase by the project team.

Accepted file formats include:

  • PDF (preferred)
  • JPEG
  • PNG

Files should be submitted at final print size (maximum width = 36 inches) and appropriate resolution for the intended viewing distance.

To help ensure equitable access to printing resources, large format printing is intended for project-related needs rather than high-volume production.

  • Requests submitted with the required minimum one week notice are generally limited to six sheets (36” x 24” size paper) of large format printing.
  • Projects requiring more than six sheets may be accommodated if additional advance notice is provided and material availability permit.
  • Approval of larger print runs is at the discretion of UP and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • UP reserves the right to limit quantities during periods of high demand.

Large format printing is available by request only.

Before printing can be approved:

  1. Email the UP Adviser assigned to your project with your printing request.
  2. Submit final print-ready files at least one week before your desired pickup date.

Changes made after file submission may require additional processing time and may delay the pickup date. Requests submitted with less than one week’s notice may not be accommodated.

Completed prints must be picked up from the UP Office.

3D Printing

UP has added a Bambulab H2D 3D printer as part of its production resources, opening new possibilities for live performance projects. This technology supports prototyping, customization, and the creation of unique production elements—from scenic details and lightweight props and costumes to specialized components that support lighting and sound.

We invite students to experiment and discover how 3D printing can enhance storytelling on stage. No prior experience is required. Starting with a small project is a great way to learn, and each attempt helps expand how this technology can support live performance in innovative ways.
